Oil Filters

When you are the leader in engine manufacturing you worry about the little things and how they might affect your product. You may not think an oil filter is important to how an engine runs, but it really is. Single and dual cam engines have very different ways of filtering oil—the single cam filters it after it leaves the engine, the dual cam engine filters oil before it makes its way into the engine. Because of this, different flow rates in the filter media are required.

S&S offers filters specifically for single cam engines—PN 31-4101 black and 31-4102 chrome—that feature a micron rating of 25. This is just enough for this type of engine to allow proper oil flow and no restriction. For the dual cam engines S&S offers two filters—PN 31-4103 black and 31-4104 chrome—with an anti-drain back valve and 7 micron filer media.

You may think the smaller filter media is the way to go for all bikes, but you would be wrong. More restrictive flow on a single cam engine will back oil up trying to exit the engine resulting in a filled crankcase, sumping and plenty of oil carryover. Exactly what you don’t want to happen.

Invest in your engine—whether it is an S&S or any other—buy purchasing the right filter for it. The black S&S filters have an MSRP of $10.45 and the chrome are just $12.95 and you can count on them working properly.
