Dan Ketchum breaks down a sharp 1989 Sportster build in this episode of Picked-A-Part, taking it from a leaking, worn-out bike to a clean race-inspired machine with serious attitude.

This one started rough. The Sportster came in leaking and tired, so Dan tore it all the way down. The motor was pulled, the cases split, everything cleaned and repainted, and the engine refreshed with new pistons and rehoned cylinders. He even shaved the cylinder fins to push the look closer to a stripped-down race bike.

From there, the build took on its own identity. It runs 17-inch shocks, a Harley Screamin’ Eagle boat tail section, and a modified Super Glide tank fitted to the frame. The rear end got attention too, with reworked shock mounts, a new brake setup, and a re-machined 13-spoke Dyna front wheel adapted for rear use.

Details are everywhere on this one. The exhaust started as a Lowbrow Customs dual open pipe system before being reworked into a SuperTrapp setup. There’s a hidden oil fill under the seat, a custom LED tail light bracket, clip-on bars, and cleaned-up hand controls that keep everything tight and functional. Up front, it sticks close to stock but gets a lower stance and a Roland Sands fork brace to sharpen things up.

Dan also gets into the thinking behind the build—why clip-ons made sense for this bike, how the direction came together, and how a simple color match drove the final paint.
This is a clean example of how to take a tired Sportster and turn it into something with purpose, style, and a nod to early race machines.

Clinton Wallace didn’t rebuild this long-bike 1952 Panhead to sit still—he built it to ride, and it shows in every inch of the machine.

In this episode, Wallace walks through the full story behind his stretched Panhead, a bike that blends clean lines with real-world function. Built out of Houston, Texas, this machine starts with a Paughco frame that he reshaped with extended down tubes, a stretched backbone, and around 45 degrees of rake. Up front, a 22-over setup from Denver’s Choppers gives it that unmistakable long-bike stance without sacrificing rideability.

This isn’t a catalog build. Wallace machined the stainless handlebars himself, built custom aluminum controls, and used stainless motor mounts throughout. The exhaust was handled with Eric at Destroyed Garage, tying the whole bike together with polished stainless that sets it apart from the usual chrome-heavy builds. He breaks down the brake setup, the decision-making behind materials, and how small details change the entire personality of a bike.

The paint came from Scott at Chemical Candy, and like always, Wallace handed it off with trust instead of direction. The result speaks for itself—a finish that fits the bike without overcomplicating it, all pulled together under the pressure of a Born-Free Texas deadline.
