17 Years Later, He`s Building Bikes Again, and They`re Seriously Good

A great-looking bike always has a story behind it, and this one earned every part of its build.

In this clip from ShopTalk Episode 339, the builder talks about where it all started, from a first chopper build in 2005 using a Flyrite Choppers roller and a 1999 Evo, to later projects like a GS1100 cafe racer and a 1978 Shovel. In this episode of Outta Focus, Jay Schulberg from Jay’s Garage walks us through his hand-built 1954 Panhead bobber sitting in a 1948 chassis, a bike that started life as a basket case and turned into a clean, hard-running vintage machine. This isn’t a show pony. Jay breaks down everything from the original ’46 inline springer front end to the handmade jockey shift, brass details, custom exhaust, aluminum rear fender, and pinned seat hinge setup. He gets into the gritty side too, repairing a cracked motor, saving a damaged rear mount, and running an oil tank that shouldn’t work but still holds its own. Then there’s the story that sets this bike apart. On the way to Sturgis, it was caught in a full truck and trailer rollover with multiple bikes. Somehow, this Panhead walked away with nothing more than a small ding in the fender. That’s not luck, that’s character. Jay also talks about his evolution as a builder, from Japanese bikes in the early ‘90s to choppers, big-inch Evo builds, and now a full commitment to pre-1970 machines. This New Garage Build-Off Prize Could Change Everything for the Winner

A 1978 Harley-Davidson Sportster XLCH gets a full custom treatment in this feature with Mike Hogenpole of Convict Customs—and the result is wild.

Built for the Grease & Gears biker build-off in Galveston, Texas, this Ironhead pushes past the usual formula. Mike has owned this bike for over 20 years—his first Harley—and that history shows in every inch of the build. Instead of going the typical hardtail and springer route, he took the XLCH in a completely different direction.

At the center of it is a one-off air ride system that lets the bike lay all the way down, with a hidden air tank, tucked-away compressor, and concealed valves that keep everything clean. The lines on this bike are tight from front to back, with bodywork that flows as one piece and a chin spoiler that doubles as part of the air system.

The details are where it really separates itself. One-piece handlebars with an internal throttle, a custom EFM auto clutch that makes it run like an automatic, stepped-edge wheels with stainless spokes, stainless exhaust, and even a stainless air tank. Every fastener was turned before install. Nothing got overlooked.

The engine carries its own personality, with shaved cylinders and pineapple-cut work from Ryan in Oklahoma. Then the finish pulls it all together. Manly Custom Paint handled the paint in under a week, combining wrinkle powder coat, airbrushed aging, and just enough grit to give it a worn-in feel without losing the sharp execution underneath.

This is a long-owned bike, reimagined with purpose, skill, and a refusal to follow the crowd.
