Traditional MMCs contains a base metal, which provides the matrix in which the ceramics are embedded. The resultant material has the wear resistance of the ceramics but without the brittleness, having the strength of mild steel but being 60% lighter. MMCs are used to make Space Shuttle struts, braces and high wear components on F-16 fighter jets.
