When you head out to Laconia next week, stop by the Broken Spoke Saloon. All week long you can see and vote on the East – Paul Cox vs. West-Chica coast bikes from the 18th – 20th.The bikes will be unveiled on the 18th and the voting will begin. Jay has put together a awesome week with music food and the daily debauchery that you can only find at the Spoke. I did send out a little Q & A to the both of them, for their thoughts on the Build Off.
How did you get involved with this build off?
Chica: Ask Jay
Paul: Jay Allen was talking to a few different people about being involved with the build off before me, and then asked if I’d like to do it. I had planned to go to Laconia, and set up at the Broken Spoke anyway, so it seemed like a good idea
What type of bike are you building?
Chica: What else a CHOPPER
Paul: Aggressive, lane splitting, ass kicking, inner city chopper.
Anything “top secret” that you will be throwing at it
Chica:Nothing, always open
Paul: Yes
How will you represent your region?
Chica: You will see it on my custom.
Paul: This area has always dictated a style that is narrow, light, maneuverable, fast and no-nonsense. Between the taxi cabs and police, that’s what you need to ride in NYC.
When will the bike be unveiled?
Chica: I don’t know
Paul: “Unveiled?” What is this, OCC? The “unveiling” will probably occur at about 2 in the morning, in the street, the night before I’m leaving. If I’m lucky enough to have it done by then.
How far are you on the build right now?
Chica: I have a no idea.
Paul: After finishing a couple more customer projects, I’ll have a chance to get started on it this weekend. I’m not kidding….
Have you two ever gone against each other before?
Chica:Yes
Paul: Nope
What do you like about the other guys style?
Chica: His creations are cool and beautiful
Paul: Chica has a great variety of skills and I think his work is very prolific in that he has built in so many different styles and on so many different platforms, but always makes it his own. Chica is authentic and no bullshit.
Do you think Laconia could favor the east coast votes?
Chica:Yes
Paul: Everything is global these days, and the regional alliances and styles have become so blurred that it doesn’t matter that much anymore. People may know and like just as much about a builder from across the country as they do about the guy in the shop across the street.
Will people be able to see these bikes anywhere else this year?
Chica: I do not know
Paul: I’ll have it in Sturgis, our Rumblers car show in August, Biketoberfest and Dayton Cyclefest in December. And of course at my shop in Brooklyn, too.
What else is coming up for you this year?
Chica: Nothing, just working as usual.
Paul: New bikes, new parts, new shows, more riding and more time with my beautiful wife and amazing daughter…
Thanks to both of them for taking time out of their hectic day to help me.
