Artistry In Iron Builder Profiles – AFT Customs

As part of our sponsorship with Las Vegas Bikefest’s Artistry In Iron, we wanted to take a closer look at the builders who have been invited to this years event. So one at a time we are going to ask each of the builders the same ten questions and let our readers get to know them all a little more. AFT Customs is our first interview, but stayed tuned for more as they come in.

AFT Customs:

We are 4 time AMD World Champion, Factory certified tech by all 4 Japanese Mfg, IMBBA Level 2. AFT Customs has been a pioneer  in building innovative world class Metric customs & component design. I started in the m/c industry in 1977. I started the AFT Customs Girls Modeling Agency for the power sports industry & teach the girls all aspects of custom bike building. We’ve proven the capability of our bikes by racing them at Bonneville & soon to be Mojave Mile. I will never build the same bike twice. An AFT bike speaks for itself.

What people places or things do you get your inspiration from for bike building?

My inspiration comes from the motocross & sport bike scene. Even our pro street & baggers from years ago had components from those worlds. People that inspire me -S. Kraus, B. Schimke, F. Krugger, R. Goldhammer, C. Foster because they’re all innovators.

What is your personal philosophy on custom bike building?

My personal philosophy on bike building is to be different. Fit & finish & the small details add up. I’m a minimalist in my design. I think metal finishes & colors give a bike life. Each bike has it’s own personality because of it’s story & it evolves throughout the build. I can’t follow a sketch. I follow my vision instead.

What is on your “Must Do” list while you are in Vegas for Bikefest?

My must do list is to lay by the pool & eat in some really good restaurants. Sounds boring but every year I work my ass off in Vegas & this year it’s R&R . I need a break from the grind for a few days.

What does being invited to build a bike for Artistry In Iron mean to you?

We were the first Metric builders to participate in the Artistry 6 years ago. That was a mile stone for us & that inspired other builders to build Metric bikes. To be recognized for your accomplishments by a show of this caliber is an honor.

How do you feel about the judging at Artistry In Iron being peer based?

Peer based judging is always the best because they are the most knowledgeable judges.

What is the best or worst feature of your Artistry In Iron build?

Best & worst features are in the eye of the beholder. A great bike should not disturb you. A great bike is like a beautiful woman – you can’t take your eyes off of her .

What kind of time goes into a build that’s at the level of an Artistry In Iron bike?

This years bike was built to race at Bonneville & the Mojave Mile . Not an over the top bike. Probably 800 hrs. Previous bikes entered were 1200- 1500 hrs.

What is you most prized possession in your shop? Example: a tool or machine that was handed down from a family member etc.

My most prized possession is the knowledge from 36 years experience. Without that none of this would be possible.

If you had the ability to look into a crystal ball and see trends in the future, what would you expect to see coming or the custom motorcycle scene?

The custom m/c scene will continue it’s racing vibe for quite a while. Baggers will be popular because they have practicality.

What do you see yourself doing ten years from now?

10 years & beyond I’ll still be building & repairing motorcycles. It’s what I was meant to do & I love it.
