From Duane Ballard Every few months the Biltwell Inc. guys plan a 24 hr. road trip. The last one was a run out and around the Salton Sea area. Twelve of us met up at the Biltwell compound at noon last Friday and headed out. We took the long way through beautiful forested canyons until we reached the desert.
The final leg was scenery straight out of the forbidden zone in Planet of the Apes. Not a living thing as far as the eye could see. Once you get to the Sea the plant and animal life returns. From what the lake smells like though I don’t see how. If you ever want to vanish off the face of the planet this is the place. From the bar restaurant that sells cans of fish ass holes, the crazy guy building a mountain of hay and adobe in the name of God, to the crazy lost hippies in Slab City. This place was strange from beginning to end. It’s a great ride with scenery you won’t soon forget. Just make sure you do it anytime except the summer. It gets HOT out there.
