Mythical Chopper

There always seems to be that one lucky dude we all know that discovers a barn find from time to time. These relics may be stock Harleys or possibly an old metric bike that has been stored away for years in some old barn, garage or basement. Most of the time you find a stock Panhead or Shovelhead that was somebody’s granddad’s or maybe their uncle’s. Have you ever wondered where all the choppers go? During the sixties and seventies choppers were every where but now-a-days it’s becoming increasingly harder to uncover that old barn-fresh chopper. Most of them, as we all know, seem to get changed around over time. You just never seem to find one from back in the day that has remained the same. That’s just how choppers work: break them, fix them, ride them, and then sell them when you’re bored so you can move on to the next build.

This year, while wrenching in my shop, I got the word where one of these “mythical” choppers might just be. My interest was piqued; I had a new mission to find this bike and shoot it! Well month’s went by and nobody had seen this “all original chopper,” it was like Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster, there just weren’t many sightings of it. Then one night, I got the call! The beast just happened to be spotted at a local bike night down the street, so I grabbed my gear and headed out to see this once-in-a-lifetime find. I was lucky enough to catch Howie Abramson, the owner, with his bike and ask his permission to shoot his unmolested basement-find chopper.

Howie has his own carpet cleaning company here in metro Atlanta and one day while at a customer’s house, he found this rare beast of a bike just sitting in the basement. After a little small talk, Howie and the former owner struck up a deal. He picked this thing up for less than I spend on cigarettes every year; go figure. The bike was in boxes and crates but as Howie started piecing it back together, every nut and bolt was there. The only thing he had to replace was the primary belt, starter relay and the front brake line, the rest is all original. It took a few months to get this beauty back up running and road worthy but the time it did take was definitely well worth it. This bike is a legend in its own right and really turns heads everywhere he takes it. The bike was originally built by some cats up north somewhere. The story has it that it was in Easyriders in 1979. He is still trying to track down the info on the builder and what issue it was in. The bike still has its stock eighty inch Shovelhead motor that really pushes it down the road, and the stock four speed still puts all that power to the ground. I had the pleasure of riding this bike for a few miles and I can tell you that the narrow Paughco Springer really floats this chopper on the pavement and the Sifton brakes do a great job of slowing down the bitchin’ sundial wheels. Man, I have to tell ya, you just don’t find motorcycles like this anymore! The paint is what really sets this bike off. The hours it must have taken to paint every piece is just amazing! Even with the chips in the paint, it is still just a badass ride. Everything on this bike just flows together from the handlebars down to the wheels and the paint is the time capsule keeping it all together. This bike has class that’s straight out of 1979!

It was a great thing to be able to shoot this rare bike and write a little bit about it. It’s too often that bikes like this get taken apart and made into some kind of mess. This endangered species of a chopper deserves to be left just like it is for years to come so that others can see its beauty. Who knows, maybe one day you could see this bike on display at the Wheels Through Time Museum.
