Million Mile Iron Man

From the desk of Tony “Pan” Sanfelipo ; Most of you have followed the adventures of former Wisconsin Senator Dave Zien and his attempt to log one million miles on a single bike. He was poised to hit his target last fall when the unexpected took him out of the game. He blew a piston just outside of Yuma, Arizona in October, 2008. We decided to lay off for the winter and set out for the record this spring.

Well, he’s up and at it again, riding in Arizona as I post this news item. When he returns to Wisconsin, he and I will head for Florida on March 30th to pick up a couple of other riders. John “Rogue” Herlihy, Sturgis Freedom Fighter Hall of Fame member and well known photo-journalist, will ride back to cover this historic event for several bike magazines and Bikernet.com internet news. Joining him will be Bruce Arnold, Miami, who just recently was certified as the first Harley-Davidson rider to complete the Iron Butt Bun Burner 4500 Trifecta.

BBG4500

Only a very few people have accomplished this and no one until now on a Harley. The four of us will ride back to Milwaukee after some media stops and there will be a huge “landing” party at Hal’s Harley-Davidson, New Berlin, Wisconsin, on April 4th at noon.  If all goes as planned, Dave’s odometer will roll over to all zeroes as we enter Hal’s parking lot. You don’t want to miss this historical motorcycle moment.  The Harley-Davidson Motor Company will most likely be taking part in this event and we may be asked to ride from Hal’s over to the Juneau plant. Those things have yet to be worked out, but I wanted to give you all the date of this special happening in hopes you can join us to celebrate a true long distance rider. Please share this information with your friends and any mailing groups you post to.

There will be numerous motorcycle media represented to cover this story. Also, we’re hoping Michael Kneebone, president of the Iron Butt Association will attend. I know several state legislators and local government representatives will be on hand. Please plan on attending this event to say thanks to Dave Zien for all he has done for motorcyclists over the years. He’s been a state legislator for years and authored every motorcycle friendly piece of legislation in Wisconsin. He’s been an outreach director and champion of veteran’s rights (he’s a Marine combat veteran, Viet Nam, 1968-70) and was the driving force behind numerous biker, veteran and law enforcement monuments in our state.
