Last month we showed ya how to tear down a Harley Twin cam to do a cam swap. This Month I’m headed to Dead End Cycles in Defiance, Ohio to show you how to put it all back together.
This is the inner cam bearing installation tool. It is used to install the inner cam bearings by pressing them into the engine case.
With the cam bearings installed, place the cam chain around the cams and make sure the dots on the cams are aligned up.
Slip the cams into the cam plate making sure the cams are still aligned.
Install the front cam washer and retaining clip.
Install the rear cam shoe.
Install the cam plate into the engine and install the fasteners
“finger tight”. Install the oil pump alignment screws to align the oil pump. Now torque the cam plate
fasteners to spec. Remove the alignment screws and install the fasteners and torque them.
Install crank and cam gears with the chain. Align the dots here also. Install the crank & Cam bolts using RED Loctite. 35 Ft. lbs cam 25 Ft. lbs crank. Hold the foot brake with the bike in gear so the engine doesn’t move while torqueing.
The cam outer shoes can now be installed
Remember how we cut the old push rods out with bolt cutters? We are installing an adjustable push rod kit.
With the dots still aligned on the crank and cam gear you can now install the rear cylinder push rods. The longest push rods are for the exhaust and the shorter ones are the intake. On the rear
cylinder install the push rods and tubes and adjust them out till the push rod touches the rocker and the lifter. At this point adjust
them out an additional 2 ½ turns and tighten the jam nut down. You will have to wait 15 mins to
30 mins for the lifters to bleed down, before you go any further. When the lifters have bled down you will be able to turn them with your fingers. Now to install the front push rods rotate the engine till dots on the crank and cam gear are 180°from there alignment point (lifter will be on base circle of the cam) Now you can install the front push rods, tubes and adjust them same as the rear.
Now you can install the cam cover with a new gasket and reassemble the rest of the bike. If you have any questions for Jayme at Dead End Cycles feel free to email him or call the shop. deadendcycles@artelco.net www.deadendcycles.com 419-393-2574
