The National Transportation Safety board stated Tuesday that there should be a ban on the use of ALL  cellphones and other portable electronic devices, except in emergencies while operating a motor vehicle.

This was unanimously agreed to by the five-member board. If this were to be in affect it would apply to both hands-free and hand-held phones and would exceeds any existing state laws restricting texting and cellphone use behind the wheel.

Tuesday’s recommendation, if adopted by states, would outlaw non-emergency phone calls and texting by operators of every vehicle on the road.

It would apply to hands-free as well as hand-held devices, but devices installed in the vehicle by the manufacturer would be allowed, the NTSB said.

The recommendation would not affect passengers’ rights to use such devices.

This recommendation was made by the NTSB  in connection with a deadly highway pileup in Missouri last year. The board said the initial collision in the accident near Gray Summit, Mo., was caused by the inattention of a 19 year-old-pickup driver who sent or received 11 texts in the 11 minutes immediately before the crash.

The board is expected to recommend new restrictions on driver use of electronic devices behind the wheel. While the NTSB doesn’t have the power to impose restrictions, it’s recommendations carry significant weight with federal regulators and congressional and state lawmakers.

I am not so sure that putting a ban on these things are going to help. When there are many other things that can cause accidents. Take this for example:

A Miami Police Officer was not hurt but he reached down to pick up a pen and drove his cruiser up a guide wire on a pole. Boy I bet he will never live that down. 111214085401_police-car-up-a-pole

What are your thoughts on this?

Do you think they should even consider the ban?
