Freeway Prophecies

Now everyone knows I give some pretty cool "assignments" but when Indian Larry Motorcycles offered me one of their stellar motorcycle to take for two days and ride it like I stole it, that had to be the coolest.  As an added bonus, the bike they offered me was a sort of a prototype. It is one of two bikes they built with an experimental soft tail frame. I’ve ridden plenty of stock Harley Softtails- Heritages, fatboys and the likes. I don’t want to hurt anyone feelings that owns those but I never rode one I liked. I think the handle terrible and ride rough. Even the after market frames I have ridden I didn’t like.  It all changed with this one.
The first day I rode out to the Point at the end of long Island. I had to ride through The Hamptons. With all the Bentleys and Porches, this bike out shined them all and everyone took notice. When I stopped for gas or to tale a few pictures, a crowd always massed.  They wanted to know everything I could tell them about the bike. I’m used to getting some attention with the bikes I ride but this was a whole other level. I had no idea just how much appeal this bike had to others. I also had no idea about the ride.
I ride a rubber mount bike with a swingarm because I put a lot of miles on and I like comfort and handling. Being that this was a custom chopper with a beautiful handtooled leather seat with no padding, I thought it would be only nice for a bar hopper. I was wrong. That first day I was in the saddle about 7 hours. It really was comfortable. I rode a lot of mixed conditions- I hit traffic and I had some open highways, back country roads and even some residential side streets.  It was a dream to ride all those conditions. I wasn’t expecting to be enjoying it so much that I would want to ride another long day again the next day. No only did I but I opted for an even longer day and went about twice as far. On the second day I took the bike south down the Garden State Tollway to Atlantic City and after stopping just long enough for a couple pictures, I blasted into Philadelphia. I wanted to get back to NYC early so I only stopped for gas and then rode straight back to the city. The power on the bike was incredible and the nimble handling made weaving in and out of traffic fun. Just ask my friend who saw me in South Jersey but despite his attempt to catch up with me, he couldn’t even get close. He texted me or I would have never known.
It was nothing like I thought for sure. I had made them strap on a small tool bag with some basic tools because I thought something would vibrate lose being a fresh build. I was wrong. Everything worked perfectly with zero problems. I think if anything was going to break it surely would have. Everyone knows how hard I am on my bikes and I didn’t take it easy on this one at all. It took everything I threw at it and it really begged for more.
In the end I came to understand just what Indian Larry Motorcycles are all about. Beautifully handcrafted works of art that and made to ride. Now I just got to figure out how talk them into letting me go for an even longer ride!
