Artistry In Iron Builder Profiles – Bones Legacy

As part of our sponsorship with Las Vegas Bikefest’s Artistry In Iron, we wanted to take a closer look at the builders who have been invited to this years event. So one at a time we are going to ask each of the builders the same ten questions and let our readers get to know them all a little more. Bones Legacy is our sixth interview, but stay tuned for more as they come in.

Bones Legacy:

Bones and I met in 1990. we were just two regular guys building old choppers out of our garage. In 2005 after Bones passed away ,my best friend and mentor in building bikes. I chose to name my shop after Bones and keep his legacy alive. Later on I met another collector of vintage choppers from New York, Richie (Seen). East Coast meets West coast. We then joined forces. Our philosophy in building bikes is we like to keep the true spirit of the golden age of choppers alive from the 60’s and 70’s.

10 Questions:

What people places or things do you get your inspiration from for bike building?

People places…. would be bike shows, I like to check out what the other builders are doing. I also like to look at old and new magazines. When building bikes, heavy metal music gets me inspired.

What is your personal philosophy on custom bike building?

Philosophy…. Be inspired, Pushing myself to go to the next level, and don’t worry what others are doing.

What is on your “Must Do” list while you are in Vegas for Bikefest?

Must do at Bikefest…..Meet new and old friends and builders.

What does being invited to build a bike for Artistry In Iron mean to you?

Being invited to Artistry in Iron……Its such an honor and inspiring to be invited to this elite bike show. Its very difficult to be chosen since there is so many talented builders out there its humbling. It was a dream come true for me.

How do you feel about the judging at Artistry In Iron being peer based?

Judging peer based….Is a very good idea and fair.  IMO the builders know how much work is really involved .

What is the best or worst feature of your Artistry In Iron build?

Best and worst of my build….Best, Metal work and paint,,, Worst, its a 30 year old motor to deal with its faults.

What kind of time goes into a build that’s at the level of an Artistry In Iron bike?

Time of build for level at A.I.I……..I don’t think anybody counts the hours, days, weeks and months that goes into these builds. it would make them sick. Its all about the labor of love.

What is you most prized possession in your shop? Example: a tool or machine that was handed down from a family member etc.

Prized possession in my shop.  My VL Panhead.

If you had the ability to look into a crystal ball and see trends in the future, what would you expect to see coming or the custom motorcycle scene?

Future. Two sides. On one side I think more people will be fabricating their own stuff more instead of bolting things on from a catalog, manufacturers will be following the underground more or will be a part of it.  On the other hand their will always be high tech gadgets and futuristic designs.

What do you see yourself doing ten years from now?

10 years from now? I hope I’m fortunate enough to still be doing what I like to do now building bikes …and or be part of the motorcycle industry.
