Bike Show, Swap Meet
Take Center Stage at Vintage Rally 2015,
Anamosa, Iowa

If you have not been to the National Motorcycle Museum out in Anamosa, Iowa, here’s a special reason to visit; the Museum is opening of two new motorcycle exhibits and presenting Vintage Rally 2015. Plus, on this one day they take the show outside and go live with Hall of Fame inductees, a vintage bike show, a swap meet, a top fuel drag bike start up and a pin stripers “panel jam.”

The Allstate Motorcycle Chopper Story exhibit presented by J&P Cycles, guest curated by author and journalist Paul d’Orleans holds about 20 select bobbers and choppers from the pre-1980 era, when cut and raked steering heads, extended front ends, stepped seats, sissy bars, and moulded frames first hit. The bikes in this exhibit are the real deal, not “old school,” just old, found from California to New Jersey, dusted off and shipped to the Museum, just for this show. Included are machines by Arlen Ness and Ron Finch. It’s really the first time such a comprehensive show has been undertaken; visitors get the story on these bikes and the people, places and times that produced them.

2 Wheels+Motor is the new motorcycle art exhibit, curated by Ric Stewart, sculptor from Columbus, Ohio. Paintings, prints, photographs and sculpture, all motorcycle themed, make up this show. Works are included from bronze sculptor Jeff Decker, painters David Uhl, Eric Herrmann, Tom Fritz and Scott Jacobs plus other fine artists from across America. Some of this art will be available to add to your collection.

Headlining the Vintage Rally is a big vintage motorcycle and bicycle show for all machines through 1988, and any customs, choppers and bobbers through 2015. Did I mention a motorcycle swap meet takes place as well? It’s all there, but you need to get to the Museum that Saturday, June 20 for all the special activities.

Hall of Famers Bill Tuman, John Tibben, Bobby Hill and Dick Klamfoth will be on hand to talk, sign autographs. Iowa racer “Tator” Gilmore will fire up his top fuel drag bike, and you can learn what it takes to run one of these beasts.

Pinstripes have been in fashion for over a century. Most are in awe of just how these artists lay the paint down so perfectly. At Vintage Rally you can get up close, watch the masters do a lay out, then pin stripe in a group session, a.k.a. a “panel jam.”

Attend the Motorcycle Collecting panel discussion in which six experts who collect, buy and sell old bikes share their wisdom, help you make smart decisions for what you surround yourself with and keep into the future. Motorcycle collecting, restoring and stewardship is bigger than ever. It’s important to carry on a motorcycle’s history, keep it for next generations to enjoy. But as with many pursuits, there are potential pitfalls in all of this and you’ll get pointers on how to avoid them.

Polish up a couple of your best 1988 and older motorcycles or bicycles and bring them to the Vintage Rally Bike Show; you make the show. Arranged on the concrete show range by country of origin, judges will carefully review all entries and make their choices; about 40 trophies, by Motorcycle Classics magazine, will be awarded. Preserved/unrestored motorcycles will be judged for the Hagerty Motorcycle Insurance Preservation Award. For 2015 we are celebrating the opening of the Allstate Motorcycle Chopper Story exhibit presented by J&P Cycles, so choppers, bobbers and customs built up to 2015 are welcome. Here’s all you need to enter your bike.

Parts, memorabilia and motorcycles are all on display in the Swap Meet. Unpredictable as the weather in what might be on a table or tarp, swap meets are a great place to make a few bucks selling what you no longer need, or maybe finding something for a current project.
