A Sacrifice Not to be Forgotten

finalsalute

Anyone who knows me knows that I have a tremendous amount of love and reverence for the U.S. Armed Forces.  We ought not to forget that these men and women make a conscious choice to serve everyday in each of the branches of a completely voluntary U.S. Military.  Thank them for their service.

The Pulitzer Prize winning book Final Salute: A Story of Unfinished Lives by Jim Sheeler was placed in my hands by a dear friend of mine, LtCol Stephen Beck, USMC (Ret).  Little did I know when I opened it’s cover that it was “his” story.  This is a book every American needs to read.  For me to give away its storyline would do it an injustice.  Buy it, borrow it from the library or a friend.  Just read it and see if it doesn’t profoundly impact your life and the way you view each and every man and woman in uniform protecting our freedoms.  This book has no political slant.  It just gives a very real look into the lives of the U.S. Soldier.

As a follow-up to his service in the U.S. Marine Corps, LtCol Stephen Beck founded Remembering the Brave, an organization dedicated to honoring those soldiers who’ve made the ultimate sacrifice in their service to our country.  Country music singer Johnny Bulford has written a song, “Remember the Brave,” in support and solidarity with this organization.  You can see Johnny perform at this year’s Daytona Bike Week on March 7th at Seminole Harley and March 8th at The Barn.

This book is an absolute must read.  You’ll never see the U.S. Armed Forces or, more importantly, the lives of those individuals serving therein, in the same light again.
