Damn good…. But Epic?

IMG_3935 Ya’ know, it’s become painfully obvious to many of us here at the magazine that some words from our circles have become horribly over used. Among them and from the top: Old School, Killer, my own very dear “Cats” as a reader reminded me just recently and now the ever prevalent “Epic” has moved to the forefront of our most commonly to often thrown around superlative.

You know the deal, you ask someone what they did this weekend and the response, oh….. It was Epic! I’ve known some cats that have used this word as part of their regular persona for as long as I’ve known them and for them, this whole craze is a huge rip off and I hope they understand my rant. Think about this in the realm of old Merriam Webster. Her definition is below, and I would have to say it puts things in a better perspective.

1ep·ic   adj \?e-pik\   Definition of EPIC

1 : of, relating to, or having the characteristics of an epic <an epic poem>

2 a : extending beyond the usual or ordinary especially in size or scope <his genius was epicTimes Literary Supplement>

Now, I would have to say that there have been a few, golden moments in my time on the motorcycle that could have been referred to as Epic, but very few. Most of the time they were very high on the list of great times with good brothers. So I wonder what the need we have to so boldly describe what it is we are doing and why it is so much more, somehow, than anything else that is or ever has gone on before. This over use of wildly lavish catch phrases blows my mind. It’s like hearing two teenage girls talk in text language… Ya’ know, JMHO…… BFF…… That kinda’ shit. Hell, I’m just a simple man so maybe you can explain it to me. Maybe we’ve just run out of other suitable terms to define our times……. or maybe, to coin another overly used phrase, “If you have to explain it, maybe I just don’t want to understand anymore. In the case of the later, I humbly offer these alternatives. Also provided by the good people at Webster’s.

Words that could be used instead of Epic ……

colossal, monstrous, prodigious, stupendous, tremendous; kingly, lordly, princely, queenly; awesome, awful, cosmic (also cosmical), sublime, wondrous; formidable, impressive, prepossessing, redoubtable; apocalyptic (also apocalyptical), inflated, operatic, overblown, pompous; marvelous (or marvellous), superb, terrific, wonderful; extravagant, lavish, luxurious, opulent, palatial, palatine, sumptuous; gorgeous, resplendent, splendiferous; extraordinary, killer, remarkable, sensational, striking; celestial, divine, heavenly…..
