The Iron Horse Hotel founds BUILD Moto Mentor Program;
2011 kicks off inaugural year

Through a new educational outreach program called BUILD,
The Iron Horse Hotel (Milwaukee, WI) with a team of dedicated volunteers and motorcycle enthusiasts, is offering local high school students the opportunity to learn vintage bike restoration while developing important life skills. The Iron Horse Hotel, the nation’s only high end boutique hotel catering to motorcycle enthusiasts, serves as the conduit for connecting experienced Mentors with six teams of local high school students. Together they have 90 days
and $2,000 to rebuild a vintage Honda CB or CL 160. The 90-day build kicked off on February 15 and concludes Mid-May. The teams will be rewarded for their efforts with incentives along the way, recognition through displays this summer, prize packages and the actual racing of their bikes at Road America (Elkhart Lake, WI) in June.

Teams and bikes will be judged in five categories Each team will have an opportunity to win prizes in various categories upon conclusion of the build, including ‘Crowd Favorite,’ a social-media driven vote through Facebook and Twitter. Prizes will also be awarded in the following categories: ‘Fastest Bike’ (based on a dyno competition) ‘Art Bike,’ ‘MilVinMoto Best of Show,’ and ‘Best Documentation,’ presented to the team that captures the best documentation of their build. Documenting the unique process through still photos and video Each team consisting two Mentors, a dedicated Faculty Advisor and three to five students was given a Flip Video UltraHD Cam with instructions on how to shoot dynamic video of their build. The teams will upload video each week to their school’s designated ‘dropbox’ for editing by Dactyl Transmedia, a Milwaukee company that specializes in telling narratives through multiple vehicles. Each team will be featured twice on The Iron Horse Hotel’s active Facebook page with a pictorial and video clip, with more details and specific information posted on the Build Milwaukee Community Organization page. The hotel’s page can be
found at facebook.com/theironhorsehotel with the BUILD page at facebook.com/pages/pages/Build-Milwaukee/110349039042930. At the conclusion of the build, footage from all six teams will be compiled into a 5-7 minute short film. Growing the program and sharing it through displays After conclusion of the 90-day build, the six bikes will be displayed throughout the region over
the summer of 2011. The ‘summer tour’ begins June 2nd at The Iron Horse Hotel, kicking off the hotel’s 2011 Bike Night Calendar, consisting of signature nights celebrating the art of the
motorcycle. There the bikes will be judged and team prizes awarded before being raced by the teams’ Mentors at the AHRMDA races at Elkhart Lake’s Road America June 10-12. The
bikes will shown in two bike shows, at Milwaukee’s ‘Rockerbox’ Street Festival on July 30th and Chicago’s ‘Mods vs Rockers’ Vintage Motorcycle and Scooter Rally on June 17-18th.
Discovery World in Milwaukee serves as the program’s exclusive museum exhibit, where the bikes will displayed from the end of June through July. Besides showcasing the bikes themselves, the BUILD display will feature information about the program, imagery of this year’s build and information about how other schools and Mentors can get involved in 2012 and beyond. “With overwhelming support and positive feedback in only our first few weeks of launching, it’s our intention to grow this program in the coming years” said Tim Dixon, owner of The Iron Horse Hotel.“ With so many shop classes throughout the country disappearing, we’re hoping dynamic displays of the program will inspire others to join in, both locally and on a national level. We’re not only building bikes; we’re teaching valuable life skills to students.” Three of
the six bikes were funded privately, with The Iron Horse Hotel sponsoring funds for the remaining three. These three bikes will be auctioned off in August with proceeds going back into the BUILD program.
