I ran into the cats from Siouxicide Choppers a while back and they were telling me about their 39mm springer kit that is a simple bolt on springer for all new model Sportster and Dyna model motorcycles. Quite simply it is a quick and eas yway to get dramatic effects from any year that came stock with a 39mm front end. I asked them to take us through how easy the installation is for our readers this month. This springer kit allows you to use your stock 39mm triple trees so you don’t have any major modifications. Your steering stops still work, your stock handle bars still work and you are able to install this without cutting, grinding or welding.
Start off with the stock 883 sportster front end with 19” stock wheel.
Remove the front wheel, headlight and headlight shroud.
Loosen the four pinch bolts holding the fork tubes in and slide the fork tubes out.
Slide new right springer back leg in holding the spring perch so the back leg slides through it. Snug the set screw on the spring perch to hold in place. Snug one pinch bolt on the triple tree.
Install rocker on bottom of back leg.
Install left rear leg and snug one pinch bolt to hold it in place. Install the other rocker. Slide the axle through both rockers (this makes sure the rear legs are straight). Once the axle is through and you can rotate all around insuring alignment, then tighten all pinch bolts and set screws.
Install the rods into the front rail. Put the bottom 2 springs on (1 inner & 1 outer on each side) with bottom spring holders and slide up into the spring perch on the bike. Note; The 2 spring perch bushings must be inserted into the spring perches.
Use Anti-seize on the shoulder bolts going through the oil imbedded bronze bushings.
Install front rail.
Tighten the shoulder bolts and then install and tighten the lock nuts on the back side of the shoulder bolts. Note; we use Loctite on every nut and bolt!
We installed the front wheel and put 2 ratchet straps on and ratcheted the front end down tight to load the springs so you can install the top 4 springs.
We installed the top springs and a standard 5-3/4” bucket headlight and then released the ratchet straps.
We installed this on a stock 883 sportster with a 23” 60 spoke wheel and our own 2 piston brake set-up.
