Letters To The Editor
You Nailed It Man! Chris, I really like your magazine. You provide a good mix of articles and feature bikes, and, the price on the newsstand is reasonable. In September’s editorial, you hit the nail right-smack-dab on the head. The "Wal-Marting" of America is one of the main reasons that firms such as Budweiser are selling out... or moving out! But, we the people are partly to blame. We want top wages with excellent benefits, but don’t want to pay a fair price for the products we buy. In addition, shareholders are not satisfied with the long-term, steady growth of yesterday... hence, companies are forced to down-size or the products we purchase are produced elsewhere. As for Budweiser and the others selling out for the big bucks... Great Granddaddy founded the company and successive generations built it into a very successful business. But, it seems as though the present day descendants don’t realize the responsibility that was passed on to them. Their ancestors worked their tails off building a company in order to employ as many of their neighbors as possible. They grew the company in order to provide for their community. They passed it on to the next generation with that same intent. The company is the family’s "gold watch". As I see it, the great-grandchildren don’t have the right to sell that gold watch. Well, enough of that ranting. On another note, if you aren’t aware, there’s a top quality custom bike builder in the Denver area who you might want to feature. "Irish" Rich Ryan builds mainly custom old-school bikes and is listed on the Internet under Shamrock Fabrications. Perhaps you’ve heard or read of him; big time talent in a small operation. Again, great magazine!-Gary
Dude, thanks for the good words. I sure do know Irish Rich’s work, I’ve seen it a ton in the Horse and Street Chopper over the years. I’d love to have some of his stuff in Cycle Source but we just haven’t ran into him. Tell him I’d love to see what he’s workin’ on.
We Want Reader’s Rides! Wildman, Great rag, enjoy reading it. I’m a gray beard pushing the high side of 50, been riding since my mid teens on rice grinders. My first HD was a 1960 pan I bought back in 1970 from Mill’s HD dealer in Burlington NJ. Since then I’ve owned several HD’s over the yrs. At the moment I have 3 shovels and do most of my own wrenching and wiring. The first time I read your rag, I picked a copy up at Bill’s Custom Cycles just before he bought out that old HD dealer’s inventory you did the story on. Something you might wanna consider starting in your rag, have a page or two or three per issue where you post pictures of scooters that riders send you with a basic description of their 20 yr. or older scooter whether it’s stock, coppered or restored. My opinion this would give a more down to earth connection to the everyday grassroots readers and riders that wrenches on his own scooter. Thanks Big Ed
Hey Ed, ya’ know we do a reader’s ride section from time to time but we have to save up to run them ‘cause most of the time we just put our readers in as full features. But hey, help me get the word out and maybe we can get that up and running. Calling all wrenchers, send us your pic and a paragraph.
Note From FU Bob Wild Man- Please you’re killing me. We all know you guys know bikes and all the good stuff that goes with it. I swear I’ve been reading bike mags. and the like from back in the ‘60s. Never have I got such a kick and laughs as hard as I do when the Source shows up at my door. Duke is just too much with his "Back in the Day." It’s like talking to old friends around the fire with some Jack. The intro. to "In the News", Vol. 12 was way too funny. It’s great that you guys keep a good sense of humor with all the running around and hard work you do. Please keep it up. I’d write more but I am too busy crying from the "Gut Busters!" - F.U. Bob
Hey Bob, great to hear from you. Ya’ know it’s funny you’d write in this month since it was your daughter that we ran in the first soldiers page that I mentioned to the Jack-Off in the beginning of this column. Anyway, glad you dig the stuff from Duke, I told him about doing that shit for like a year before he just gave in and did it. Now it seems like it’s one of the favorite things people dig about the magazine.
Need Some Help Wild Man- Just wanted to send a letter to ask for help from Cycle Source readers. Ran into some hard times and need to get rid of the ol’ man’s bike. It’s a 2003 Fat Boy with low miles and some chrome. He’s in a jam and we need to sell this or have someone take over payments. BJ
